Las bolas de plasma son físicamente unas ampollas de cristal de cierto tamaño con un electrodo interno central, las cuales internamente están cargadas con un gas que al aplicarle una tensión conducen y generan una luz brillante visible en forma de plasma, donde su color e intensidad varia en función del gas con el que estén cargadas, la presión interna y de la alta tensión aplicada.
Para excitar una bola de plasma es suficiente con un generador tipo Flyback o similar.


Como gases principales se utilizan el Helio, Nitrógeno, Neón, Argón, Xenón, Kriptón, Gás carbónico (CO2) y combinaciones entre ellos. El más fácil de conseguir para métodos experimentales sería el Helio utilizado para el inflado de globos, el cual genera un plasma azul púrpura o el CO2 también puede ser fácil de obtener ya que se utiliza en bebidas gaseosas.
